“Instead of trying to make your life perfect, give yourself the freedom to make it an adventure, and go ever upward.” -Drew Houston
An Adventure Begins
Do you remember “Choose Your Own Adventure” books that were popular in the 80s and 90s? They were always a favorite of mine growing up. Instead of reading a book straight through, you would get to make choices at the end of each chapter.

You would make your decision, then jump to a totally different section of the book to find out if your choice led to a good outcome or a bad one. I’ve kind of always looked at my life like a real life version of those books and, luckily, I was able to marry a girl that shared that same sense of adventure.
Well, we just so happen to be ready to make our choice on what to do next…this time we’d like to share where that takes us.
We sold our home in Minocqua Wisconsin in December of 2015. It was a tough decision. This was our first home that we moved into after getting married and we were definitely torn on whether to stay or try something different.
Good Bones
Our plan was to find a home, preferably on a lake, that had “good bones” but needed strong cosmetic updates. Luckily we live and work in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, which is home to thousands of lakes, so the waterfront part wasn’t too difficult. However, discovering a place with just the right mix of features and that fell in our budget (including renovations) was WAY tougher than we thought it would be.

The List
We had to narrow down the search for our perfectly imperfect home so we came up with a list of features we were looking for. Here they are (ranked in order of importance)
- Location (Close to work and school)
- Price (including remodel budget)
- Quality Property and Lake (No Swamps, steep frontage, or busy roads)
- Good Structure, with dated interior, needing minor cosmetic updates
- Low exterior and property upkeep
You know those romantic comedies, where the quiet unassuming girl just needs someone to come along, pull off her glasses, let down her hair and *gasp* you find out that she was absolutely beautiful all along? We were basically looking for the home version of that.
And we found it!
